“As a hen when she hath found a worm, or a barleycorn, clucks for her chickens, that they may come and partake of it with her; so, a man acquainted with Christ, who hath tasted that the Lord is gracious, he cannot hold, he will be calling upon his friends and relations to come and share with him of the same grace.” -Thomas Manton
Pretty self explanatory, especially if you have been around chickens. However, she doesnt just cluck for her chicks so they can eat, she clucks out of excitement. She knows her own belly will soon be full and it excites her, and she calls for others to join.
As Christians, once we partake in the grace and mercy of God, we can’t help but want others to know of these marvelous riches that the Lord gives His children freely. Our own excitement overflows and our new heart desires all to come to the table.
The Hen and the Christian alike are blessed by God. He cares for His creation and provides. But for the Christian it goes so much deeper. The chicken will always be a chicken, but God makes us a new creation, 2 Corinthians 5:17 reads “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
We are given a new heart, a new nature, and are given the righteousness of Christ. Our sins are remembered no more and we are adopted as God’s own children (Romans 8:15).
How could we not want others to sit at the same table? Why wouldn’t we all want to be like the Hen who cares for her chicks and calls them to come. The Hen that causes a stir so the whole brood knows what she has to share. We should be far more willing to share our news of what God did for sinful man through Christ than the Hen does for her feed.
