“It’s easier to cry against a thousand sins than to kill one of your own”
John Flavel
It’s very easy to point the finger with everything that’s going on in the world today. So much that goes against Christ is being flaunted right in front of us, in our own homes through the TV and radio. It can be so easy to dwell on the sins that others are committing in the church, politics, movies, news! I will say I always find myself pointing out the sins of society or groups, and it’s correct to do that. But at the same time I, along with everyone else must remember we are fallen and live in a fallen world.
We know that everyone sins but do we think of our own? Everyone has to come to terms with the fact that sin remains in each of our lives, and it is our duty to fight against these sins and to kill them at the root. Being opposed to the LGBTQ agenda is a proper response to it. We know what scripture says about sexual immorality, so we are correct in judging it as sin. But how do you look at the opposite sex? Do you find yourself consumed with watching other women/men and have inappropriate thoughts? Maybe you aren’t consumed by this but every now and then you find yourself looking and having thoughts that you shouldn’t. Jesus explains in Matthew 5:27-28 “You have heard that it was said, ‘YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY’; but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” This is a sin that needs to be killed but it seems a minor thing in our life when compared to the sin others commit. Remember this, others are not responsible for the sins we commit, we alone are responsible.
It can become a common practice to compare ourselves to others. We can get the mindset of “I must be OK, I don’t do what they do”. It can be fatal to compare yourself to others who also compare themselves to others. We are to compare ourselves to the Word of God. Never neglect pointing others toward Christ by calling them to repent of sin, but also never forget that although you may not sin the same, you still sin.
Matthew 7:3-5 “And why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye. Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ and look, the log is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye!”
We need to warn others of the dangers of sin but we must also be in a constant state of self examination. I should fear telling a man he is in sin if I sin as he does but in secret. So we should take a deep look into our lives and examine every detail. I heard a pastor say one time “If we could video just one day of your secret thoughts, you would rather die than have your closest friends and family watch it”. Imagine how fast the mood in the room would change if you just played one day of your thoughts. Sinful things said in the open are no worse than those things thought in the mind. The big sins are no bigger than the small ones. Be on guard at all times and always be aiming to rid yourself of sin. Keep in constant prayer with the word of God in your heart and on your mind. Tell others the dangers of sin and of the wrath to come but never build yourself so high that your sins seem too small to worry with.
“Be killing sin or sin will be killing you”
John Owen
Dear God prepare me to help others see the cost and dangers of sin. And help me to always see the sin in my life. Let me be truthful with myself and not be the hypocrite, judging others for things I may do in secret. Amen.
