A popular saying going around today is “live your own truth”. I’m sure this thought has been around for ages but it’s everywhere now. I’m 47 years old and have never heard this until the last 5 years.
As a kid growing up I was taught not to lie and was told the consequences of lying. There were consequences from teachers for lying in school, consequences from parents for lying anytime, and ultimately consequences from God. Lying was opposite of truth and was wrong.
Fast forward to today and that concept has become lost with a large part of society. Today you may hear people talk about right and wrong, truth and lies as subjective. They say what may be right for one person may not be right to another. What may be true for one may not be true for all. The standard of truth and righteousness has shifted. The truth has become whatever feels right to each individual. This kind of thinking is evil at its core and gives way to numerous harmful thoughts, practices and actions. This is a large part of the moral decline and complete downfall in society that we see today.
This idea of subjective truth, which also means no absolute truths, is know in philosophy as Relativism. Those who hold to this belief say that different people can have different views about what’s moral and immoral. They do not believe in objective truth and have no objective standard they can point to as their reference.
For years, actually all eternity past except for the past 5 or so years, the world believed there were only male and female. Science strictly taught male and female, each having their own distinct anatomy and only one of these two can reproduce and birth a child. That’s not what all science upholds today and it has caused a whole different branch of “social” science to be developed. Gender Science…. The truth has been blurred and now, for some, truth is ever changing the more science evolves. They say men can be women, women can be both male and female and she determines which one she feels like at the time, men can now have menstrual cycles and even become pregnant. The objective truth has been lost.
We also further see the decline of truth in the same sect of people on the issue of marriage. It’s now socially acceptable for same sex marriages to occure. With this idea of Relativism, what’s true for you may not be true for another. What ever you deem as morally wrong may be morally right to another. Everyone has their own truth. At least that’s what they think.
The TRUE Christian, not the one by label only, has an objective moral standard which informs them of right and wrong, good and evil, moral and immoral. We have an absolute Standard with absolute, unchanging truths. This moral Standard is God and the truths are His revealed Word.
The Christian can say without hesitation that same sex marriage is immoral and wrong. The Christian can say there is only male and female just as God made them. We can be sure of these truths, we see it creation and read it in scripture, we know God is righteous and all He does is good. We do not have to wonder if any of this will eventually change. It is bound in eternity.
The relativist has problems the Christian will never encounter. They have no absolute truths so they cannot say anything is absolutely wrong. If a man says he feels love for a child as a man does for his wife, within Relativism this cannot be seen as morally corrupt and evil. Of they were honest, the relativist would have to say people have the right to love and marry whom ever they wish, regardless of age. Also the relativist cannot truly say sexual assault/rape is wrong since there is no absolute truths. A particular relativist may say the act of rape is wrong but the rapist may see his actions as moral and good. So they both just live their own truth and neither can be wrong in their system.
If we step back and look at the ones who subscribe Relativism, we see that they borrow from the TRUE Christian worldview in many ways though, even while denouncing it as ancient and outdated. They seek justice when done wrong. That’s borrowing from God’s standard. How can they truly say that they were done “wrong” if wrong and right are relative? They seek for equality, which again is borrowing from God. Equal in their view is relative, and if some are treated better than others then that can be wrong because it may seem right to someone else. The Relativism has to steal from the Christian standard to maintain any shred of logic, then they deny the very standard they steal from and logic.
Thankfully God stands true no matter who rails against Him. He has given His word and it will remain. He has given us hope to rely on when we encounter this type of people with a corrupt worldview. We know without second guessing that what God calls sin is sin and will remain sin and applies to all mankind. We know that what God calls good will always be good. He is our standard for all truths and morality.
