Isaiah 40:26
“Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.”
I take my dog Clifford for night walks and let him play in the field next to my house. We both enjoy this. He loves to run and search for the largest stick that he can barely manage to drag back to me to throw and I love to stand there and stare up at the stars. They have always been there but in the last couple of years is when I have began to realize they are there and appreciate them and the God who created them.
In the blackness of night those tiny specks twinkle and shine, and for years I have overlooked them and their significance in human history. They are always there, even in the light of day, when their light isn’t visible, they never go away.
On the fourth day of all creation God created the lights in the heavens. He created the Sun to govern the day and the Moon to govern the night. And this is also when He created the stars. But God did not just create these lights and stars, He placed them precisely where He wanted them. God made them and commanded them to remain and they obey.
Look up sometime. Spend 30 minutes in the dark looking to the sky and watch everything come into focus. It absolutely amazes me to stare at what seems to be an empty spot in the sky then slowly watch more and more appear when my eyes adjust. Every little dot, every little sparkle in the same spot that God placed them in on day four of creation! Every star declaring the glory of God, and even the ones we can’t see shout at the majesty of the LORD.
It really draws me back to reality, making me realize what a tiny speck of this great creation I actually am. It helps remind me that my existence is ony for a moment. When I’m gone these stars will remain. Other generations will look to the sky and see these stars magnify the glory of God.
It also reminds me of how rebellious mankind is, including myself. Of all creation we are the highest and greatest. We are made in the “Imago Dei”, the image of God. These stars bear no resemblance, they were created to give light, but we are image bearers of our creator. The whole of creation obeys and glorifies God, but man, he rebels. I rebel.
These nights when the clouds are gone and skies are clear I see my failures in a different way. Failures so numerous that they could fill the heavens and hide every star. A small dot in the sky can continuesly declare the glory of God but i repeatedly say “no” with my actions.
At the same time it’s brought to my mind that I am in fact an image bearer of God, created to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. The stars hang in their place but I can get to look at and enjoy them. The stars and all the heavens can declare the glory of God, but I get to spend eternity with Him.
Psalms 19:1 reads “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”
Do you take time to witness this? Or are you too busy with life? It’s such an easy thing to miss but it also an easy thing to observe. Just look up. Turn of the phone, go outside, look to the sky and take it all in. Think about the wonders of creation, who created it, how it came about, what it’s purpose is, and enjoy it.
Since the heavens can declare the glory of God, how can we? We can do this through faith by worshiping God, singing praises to God, reading and abiding in His word, and making it a daily habit to enjoy all of Gods creation and seeing the work of His hand in it all.
