“Give us this day our daily bread” Matthew 6:11
This, from the Lord’s prayer, is often quoted in church services and before sporting events. It was given by our Lord as an example as to how to pray. This particular line has caused me to do some thinking.
In this model prayer we are instructed to pray for “our DAILY bread” to be given to us. I have overlooked the wording and meaning my entire life. And after hearing this fleshed out for one single minute on a podcast, it has really opened my eyes.
Notice that the Lord instructs us to pray for our “daily” bread. Not a lifetimes worth, or a years worth or even a couple days worth. It’s our “daily bread”. To me, this shows us our daily need and reliance on Christ. If we prayed for a lifetimes worth of bread, it would be a great blessing one time. And as humans we would tend to overlook that blessing and just rely on the fact that we already have a lifetime supply.
To me it also seems to show that we should not desire in over indulgences. Over indulging always points away from Christ and to other things. Our trust begins to rest in the fact that we have plenty, and the desire for more never goes away.
“Give us this day our daily bread”. The asking of the Father to supply us with what we need at this moment. Knowing we deserve nothing, and especially not an over abundance of anything, we come with a humble heart, asking of the Father to grant us this daily need, our daily bread. We will be back tomorrow to ask again and trust He will provide again. Our trust is in the giver and not what’s been given.
Matthew 9-13
‘Our Father who is in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name. ‘Your kingdom come.
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven. ‘Give us this day our daily bread. ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
Amen
